I'm having the same problem, I can not enable the gzip function, when I test the web through gtmetrix or pagespeed it accuses that there is no compression for the site. The server sends the compressed file to the user's browser, which then downloads and unpacks it. GZIP compression allows webservers to compress the content of the HTTP response (data that comes after the http response header - the html web pages) before it is sent out the wire to the browser. The deflate compressor is given a great deal of flexibility as to how to compress the data. Approximately 90% of today's Internet traffic travels through browsers that claim to support gzip. See the manual for more details. If you see Content-Encoding: gzip, that means your page was served using Nginx Gzip Module.
